Drag a .pdf, .doc or .docx file onto the upload area in RemakeCV, or click to browse. Choose a template, and processing starts immediately. If your ATS is connected you can pull a CV directly from a candidate record instead of downloading and re-uploading it.

## How do I upload a CV?

### Open the upload area

The upload area is the first thing on the dashboard. You can drag files onto it from your desktop, or click it to open a file browser.

### Select the file

RemakeCV accepts `.pdf`, `.doc` and `.docx`. There is no file size limit in the web app. See [supported file types](https://www.remakecv.com/help/getting-started/supported-file-types.md).

### Choose a template

Depending on your agency's setup, the template is selected either at upload or when you generate the document. Where a default is set, it is pre-selected either way.

### Wait for processing

A text-based file typically completes in 10 to 30 seconds. Scanned PDFs take longer because they run through OCR.

## Can I upload from my ATS instead?

Yes, and it is worth setting up. With an integration connected, you open the candidate record in your ATS, send the CV to RemakeCV, and the formatted document comes back — no downloading to your desktop and re-uploading.

Supported: [Bullhorn](https://www.remakecv.com/help/integrations/bullhorn.md), [Vincere](https://www.remakecv.com/help/integrations/vincere.md), [JobAdder](https://www.remakecv.com/help/integrations/jobadder.md), [Salesforce](https://www.remakecv.com/help/integrations/salesforce.md) and [Mercury](https://www.remakecv.com/help/integrations/mercury.md).

## What happens during the upload?

Three things, in order:

1. **Text extraction.** RemakeCV pulls the raw text out of the document. If the file has no text layer, it runs OCR over the pages instead.
2. **Structured parsing.** The AI works out which text is a job title, an employer, a date range, a bullet point, a qualification, a skill.
3. **Rendering.** The structured data is written into your template.

[How AI formatting works](https://www.remakecv.com/help/formatting-cvs/how-ai-formatting-works.md) covers each stage in more detail.

> **Tip:**
The quality of the output tracks the quality of the input. A clean single-column Word CV gives near-perfect results. A scanned two-column design is where you should expect to do some reviewing.

> **Note:**
Turning on the side-by-side original-CV view is convenient, but it also means the candidate's source file is stored on our servers. Worth knowing if your agency runs a strict retention posture — see [GDPR and data retention](https://www.remakecv.com/help/anonymisation-and-compliance/gdpr-and-data-retention.md).

## What if the upload fails?

The common causes are a password-protected PDF, an unsupported file type, a file over the size limit, or a corrupted document. See [upload failed](https://www.remakecv.com/help/troubleshooting/upload-failed.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I upload more than one CV at a time?

Yes. Drop multiple files onto the upload area and RemakeCV queues them, processing five at a time. See bulk formatting.

### Can I upload directly from my ATS?

Yes, if your ATS is connected. Bullhorn, Vincere, JobAdder, Salesforce and Mercury can all push a candidate's CV into RemakeCV without a manual download.

### What happens to the original file?

It depends on two settings: your company's CV storage setting, and your own 'display original CV' preference — enabling the side-by-side original view also stores the candidate's file on our servers. See GDPR and data retention.
