# Using the template editor

> Some agencies get a self-serve editor for fonts, margins, section order and cover pages, with changes limited to admins. Others have templates maintained by RemakeCV.

The template editor is a full self-serve template builder — fonts, margins, bullet styling, section order and headings, logos, colours, cover pages, and creating or duplicating whole templates. It is enabled for specific agencies rather than available to everyone, and only admin users can change anything — everyone else sees it read-only. If you do not see it, your templates are built and maintained by RemakeCV.

## Do I have the editor?

Look for a Template Editor option in your dashboard. If it is not there, your agency is on the standard arrangement: RemakeCV builds and maintains your templates, and changes go through support@remakecv.com.

Seeing the editor is not the same as being able to change it. Creating, renaming, duplicating, deleting, reordering and setting the default — along with every styling control — are restricted to **admin users** at your agency. If you are not an admin the editor opens read-only: you can browse the templates and preview them, but not change them.

> **Note:**
Neither arrangement is a lesser version. Having us maintain the template means layout changes are validated against awkward real CVs before they reach your consultants — which is the failure mode a self-serve editor invites.

## What the editor covers

If you have it, it is considerably more than a settings panel.

| Area | What you control |
|---|---|
| **Typography** | Document font, body size, and per-element font, size, colour, bold, italic, underline |
| **Page** | Margins on all four sides, tab stops, spacing between sections |
| **Bullets** | Symbol per indent level, indent and hanging-indent sizes |
| **Sections** | Order (drag and drop), heading text, show or hide |
| **Header and footer** | Content, logo, alignment, width |
| **Cover page** | Enable, and author its content in blocks |
| **Backgrounds** | Page background images, opacity, position and size |
| **Templates** | Create, rename, duplicate, delete, restore, reorder, set the default |

> **Warning:**
Template changes affect **every consultant's output** from that template. There is no per-user sandbox, and deletion — while reversible — is immediate. This is why editing is limited to admins; if you are one, agree changes with the team rather than experimenting in the live editor.

## How do I preview a change?

Use the editor's built-in preview, which renders the template against sample data. That is faster and safer than regenerating a real candidate, and it costs nothing.

> **Tip:**
Preview against your *longest* sample. Short CVs hide the spacing and pagination problems that a fifteen-year career history exposes immediately.

## What still needs our team?

- **New section types.** The set of sections is fixed. You can rename, reorder and hide them, and add free-form text and image blocks — but you cannot invent a new structured section.
- **Anything affecting extraction.** How content is read out of a CV is separate from how it is rendered. See [date formats, section order and headings](https://www.remakecv.com/help/templates-and-branding/date-formats-and-sections.md).
- **Template visibility rules.** Restricting a template to specific consultants is configured by us — see [template variants](https://www.remakecv.com/help/templates-and-branding/template-variants.md).

## If you do not have the editor

Email support@remakecv.com with the change. Useful things to include:

1. **Which template**, if you have more than one.
2. **What should change**, as specifically as you can.
3. **A CV that shows the problem** — far more useful than a description.
4. **Whether it applies to every CV** or only some clients, which decides whether it is a change or a new [variant](https://www.remakecv.com/help/templates-and-branding/template-variants.md).

See [requesting a custom branded template](https://www.remakecv.com/help/templates-and-branding/requesting-a-custom-template.md).

## Do changes apply retrospectively?

Not to files already downloaded — those are fixed documents. Any CV still in your history can be regenerated with the new template at no credit cost, which is how you migrate a back catalogue after a rebrand.

## Frequently asked questions

### I can't see a template editor. Where is it?

It is enabled per agency rather than available to everyone. If you do not have it, your templates are built and maintained by RemakeCV — email support@remakecv.com with the change you want.

### I can see the editor but I cannot create, rename or delete anything. Why?

Template changes are restricted to admin users at your agency, because a change affects every consultant's output from that template. Non-admins can open the editor and preview templates, but the controls that would change them are hidden. Ask an admin at your agency, or email support@remakecv.com.

### Will my changes affect CVs I already downloaded?

No. Downloaded files are fixed. Changes apply to CVs generated afterwards, and to any CV you regenerate from history.

### Can I recover a template I deleted?

Yes. Deleted templates can be restored from the editor — deletion is reversible. You cannot delete the default template at all.
